Home Made Books

Home made WINTER

is the first half of two books: home made ZOMER (Summer) will arrive spring 2012.

The WINTER book is all about comforting winter food, with inspiration from Ireland, France and Holland, the countries where I’ve lived and live. There are simple recipes for classics that everyone thought they were difficult to make, such as croquettes, pulled pork and apple cider. Step by step guides for making butter for example, the Dutch ‘Ossenworst’ sausage or Baileys. I also give recipes for things we eat on winter holidays: like Plum Pudding for Christmas, Colcannon on Halloween, Galette des Rois on Epiphany.

Just like with Home Made, I did everything in this very personal cookbook myself again: the design, the illustrations and I prepared all the dishes for photography. The pictures were taken by my husband, photographer Oof Verschuren.

How do you make cheese from pantry staples? How do you create an oven smoker from scratch in just  two minutes? How do you make ice cream without an ice cream machine? And how can you use your homemade cheese, smoked fish, ice cream and many other products in original recipes?
In this cookbook Yvette explains all of this. In clear step-by-step stories illustrated instructions, you’re encouraged to learn and prepare new cooking techniques without needing to run to the store to buy expensive ingredients or complicated kitchen gadgets.
After reading this book, you’ll be able to say that everything you cook is HOME MADE.

The book begins with breakfast and works its way through the day:
how to bake your own bread in the morning and fix a healthy and original lunch after that, towards the afternoon: how to make your own brewed tea, bake cakes, the happy hour: how to make your own drinks, liqueur, how to make nibbles and bites, the evening: dinner, cheese, dessert, through the night: how to make mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise for those who need something to eat, after a night out at the pub.
There are even recipes for doggy treats.
The book ends with menus: assembled with the recipes, to combine to dinners or buffets for all occasions.

Home made is all about making everything yourself, and so did Yvette van Boven to make this book: She made her own fonts, drew the illustrations, wrote all the recipes, prepared the food for the photographs  and designed the book.
Her husband, photographer Oof Verschuren, took all the beautiful images.

Yvette van Boven (Ireland, 1968) divides her time between Amsterdam and Paris. She is a freelance food stylist and recipe writer and owns, together with her cousin, a restaurant and catering company in Amsterdam. She also illustrates books and magazines. Her work appears regularly in magazines such as Delicious., Elle Food, Flow, Margriet, newspapers and books.

Home Made will be published in English, Fall 2011 and distributed all over the world.

MINI BOOKLETS

I’m really getting excited now. Our book is almost finished, so that’s great. Since this weekend you can get little versions of our big book for free at the counter of almost all the bookshops in Holland. I’ll show some pages of it down below. It really is beginning to look like the real thing, isn’t it? Oof Verschuren, my husband, took the wonderful pictures and I did everything else. It’s a hell of a job, but the best thing I’ve done so far. I’d do another one in a blink. SO > Run down to your local bookshop and get yourself a copy!
